Cuevas del Conventico

Historic underground complex excavated from the rock in Melilla la Vieja

History

Its construction dates from the 18th century. They were mainly used in times of danger, serving to shelter the population, religious images, and to officiate Mass. There was even a bread oven.

Contents

Divided into three levels, the entrance level is set out in an irregular gallery with cliff-facing windows. A staircase leads down to the lower level, the most monumental, which has a floor plan in the shape of a papal cross, with a wide nave longitudinally crossed by three others.

The intermediate level was the ossuary of the church and today it serves as access to the Cala de Trápana.
